An Islamic scholar from Pakistan has issued a religious ruling, or fatwa, in which he condemns suicide bombing as contrary to Muslim teaching.

Dr Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri is the founder of an organisation called Minhaj ul-Quran International, which works for peace between different faiths and communities.

He issued his fatwa in the UK, rather than in Pakistan.

Newshour's Robin Lustig asked him why.

To discuss the issues, Robin spoke to Dr Azzam Tamimi, a British Palestinian academic and activist and Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain.

How much notice does Dr Tamimi believe British Muslims will take of that message?

First broadcast 2 March 2010
